Parlor gamesâ¦
Eli had no desire to take part in such tedious activities. If he didnât have an ulterior motive, he would have made himself scarce. He still had a bet to win, and so far, he had made almost no progress on that end. Admittedly, he didnât care to win that wager for the sake of, well, winning. He wanted to ensure his dear friend had love in her life again and he did fully believe that Elenaâs happiness could be found with the Earl of Northfield. He just had to help her see that.
Once he ensured Elena and Northfield found their way back to each other, he could give his regrets to their hostess and then return to London. It was for the best that he left as soon as possible. He couldnât stay at the house party or heâd give in to the temptation that was Lady Gabriella St. Giles. He wanted her. Almost desperately⦠If he thought he deserved a lady as sweet and honorable as Lady Gabriella, he wouldnât fight that temptation nearly as hard as he had been. But he knew better.
Elena entered the room and grinned when she met Eliâs gaze. âI thought you might find a way to excuse yourself from this activity.â
âWhy would I?â He grinned. âIt sounds quite entertaining.â It terrified him a little bit if he was being honest. There were so many risks involved with this little scheme he had devised. He might manage to pair Elena with the earl, but he also could find himself alone with Lady Gabriella. Still, he would take that risk, and gladly if it meant Elena ended up with a man she loved, and loved her in return. âIâm here to help, as requested.â
âAre you?â She lifted a brow. âThen, by all means. Assist meâ Elena smiled. âHold these cards for me while I arrange the rest.â
He stared down at the cards. âHow is this a parlor game exactly?â
âIt isnât,â Elena said. âNot in the traditional sense. Youâll understand more once everyone arrives.â
A few moments later, Lord Northfield entered, followed by Lord Cocwood. The earl and the baron didnât seem to like each other much. Eli knew little about the baron and reserved judgment on that score.
âAre we the first to arrive?â Lord Northfield asked.
Eli didnât roll his eyes, but he wanted to. Nothing like stating what was quite apparent to everyone present. âYou are,â he answered. âI hope youâre both ready for an entertaining afternoon.â
âI am,â Lord Cocwood said. He grinned. âIâm always ready for something enjoyable.â
Was he? Eli narrowed his gaze. Perhaps Lord Northfield had the baronâs measure, after all. âWeâre still waiting for others to join us.â He turned toward Elena. âDo you expect many of the house guests to be here?â
âI have a few more that expressed interest,â she told him. âTheyâll be here shortly, Iâm certain.â
Eli tapped his foot as he waited. He both wanted Lady Gabriella to arrive and hoped she didnât a the same time. It was quite a conundrum inside his confused mind.
